Broad Bean – Festive Fava

Another selection from our hyper-diverse broadbean project, that keeps on giving. Our original genepool for that project included Crimson-Flowered and Chocolate-Flowered lines. We selected out the green seeds, (a trait that seems to be linked to coloured flowers), and grew them out for 2 generations, selecting for anything that survived our low input gardens and culling anything with the standard ‘white with black spots’ flowers. The result was a diverse rainbow of flowers, from pale rose through lavender and red to ashy pink and brown. Apart from bringing a bit of early spring colour to the vegetable garden, this selection provides a diverse palette of colours for growers using the edible flowers as garnish or selling to the restaurant trade. This is a mass cross line, so expect diversity. Some plants may revert to standard white flowers, so sow generously.
