Description
Allium ampeloprasum
These leeks produce pea-sized bulblets or ‘pearls’ at the base of mature stems, which can be replanted for a head start on next year’s crop. We allowed mass cross-pollination between 8 leek varieties, including commercial varieties, heirlooms, a local perennial, and breeders mixes from Europe, reselecting for prodigious bulbing over 4 generations, resulting in this diverseĀ gene pool of robust, perennial leeks. These are mostly regular blue leaved, with occasional yellow and green individuals. Stems vary from tall and thin to short and fat, revealing the mixed parentage. Expect variation, and reselect for your local conditions.
